Choosing a Domain Name (Web Address) for Your Website

All domain names are unique. It is your identity and address on the World Wide Web.

Domain names can be of any length up to 67 characters. I feel the shorter the better, but I also feel the domain name of your website should closely match the name of your business. Example: If Acme Computers, Inc. is the name of your business, I believe your domain name (the address of your website) should be acmecomputersinc.com or acmecomputers.com. Many people who are not sure of your website address may just type in your business name plus .com to see if your website comes up. Also it makes your domain name easier to associate with your business name then some generic name like computers.com .

Unfortunately the exact name you want my be already taken be someone else. In that case you may want to use a hyphenated name such as acme-computers.com . Disadvantages to using a hypenated name are that is harder for people to remember, difficult to verbally say, and it is a pain in the neck to type.

The advantage is that if the non-hyphenated form is longer be available, at least this way, you still get the domain name you want. I prefer to avoid hyphenated names if I possible, but it really depends on your domain name and your situation.

Another way is to use a different extension. Example: Instead of .com, the name want may still be available with extension .net, .biz or .us

Which brings me to the many different types of extensions that are available.
The ".com" ending stands for "commercial," and is the most common extension in the world. Many businesses prefer a .com domain name because if offers its name as a recognized status on the internet. There are some .com personal webpages, so it is fairly universal.

The ".net" stands for "network," and it's the most common among various ISPs and internet service related businesses.

A ".org" extension stands for "organization," and is usually utilized by non-profits groups or other trade associations.

• .info is meant to denote credible information bearing websites. It signifies a "resource" web site. It is the fourth most popular type of website (the .net, .com, and .org extensions being most popular).

• .biz is used by small businesses for Web Sites, since a lot of the .com names have been taken by business, more and more businesses are using .biz to get the domain name they want.

• .edu is for schools and other educational websites. It is somewhat restricted and therefore information on these websites are generally given by accredited schools. Most, if not all colleges, have a .edu website.

• .us is for American Web sites and stands for "US". It has more names in inventory than any other extension. This is another option if your name with .com is already taken.

Letters and numbers are always valid characters in a Web Address. Hyphens may also be used in Web Addresses, but may not begin nor end your Web Address.
Spaces and special characters are never permitted in domain names. The special characters include, but are not limited to, these special characters: ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) ? _ (underscores)"

Domain names are not case sensitive, therefore YourDomain.Com and yourdomain.com are NOT different. Like with the domain name for this website, a person could type either "traviswebsites.com" or TravisWebsites.com.

The domains I register for you will work with or without the www. in front. Example: traviswebsites.com and www.traviswebsites.com will both work. So when advertising or telling customers your website address, you don't need to use the www.
